8-24-13 August deep sea fishing in Key Largo

There’s been some great fishing the past few weeks while offshore fishing in Key Largo. We’ve been leaving from 20 miles south of there, and been fishing from anywhere from the edge of the reef to 30 miles out. The reef has provided lots of action with yellowtail snapper and a few mutton snapper, a little further out on the wrecks we have also caught some vermillion snapper and amberjack, and then out in the gulf stream we have been catching mahi and blackfin tuna… We’ve have also been doing some swordfishing and been picking away at some fish. It hasn’t been easy but we have caught some nice fish the last month, but with the good days there has been some real slow days with no broadbill as well. We should still have plenty of snapper and blackfin tuna coming up this fall, as well as some mahi but there might not be quite as many as there has been lately.

8/2/13 August Key Largo Fishing Report in the Backcountry

The larger variety love a fresh dead mullet which we still have been able to get though is getting a little tougher especially on the flat calm days.  Getting out early for bait is very important.  Snook have been biting pretty good too we got a few nice ones out west, the mainland cape area, plus several around the flamingo area islands and such my last few trips.  Mangrove snapper fishing has been very good too with a few larger fish starting to show back up in the backcountry post-spawn.  Small pilchards work well for them or shrimp will do the trick too.  Today we had some good shark action, a big bull and lemon shark to be exact.

7/24/13 Backcountry Fishing Key Largo in July

The july key largo backcountry fishing is as hot as the temperature!  That is really saying something!  We’ve had good action with the snook this week, around many of the islands and mangrove-laden shorelines.  Not a lot of huge fish but good rod benders with a few double-digit sized fish mixed in.  They’ve been eating decent sized shrimp fairly well which have been around, as well as pinfish and pilchards.  Tarpon are still going strong too.  I’ve caught them almost every day and the key has been getting out EARLY to catch fresh live mullet.  You have to scout and look around for them, and you may even take a couple hours just catching bait.
But the payoff has been worth it, we’ve been hooking 4-8 fish a day the last week.  Early in the morning with the falling tide until about 10:00 has been stellar, and then again in the afternoon in the start of the incoming.  For dinner fare mangrove snapper fishing has been good as well as a few seatrout in the bays.  Sharks have been plentiful too.  We caught blacktips every day too as well as a few lemons, bulls, and even a roaming hammerhead one day!  As we get nearer to fall look for the redfish to get into some of the deeper areas where I usually fish them, including the runoffs and creek mouths.

7/15/13 Key Largo Backcountry Fishing

Well the key largo backcountry fishing has been holding steady in July.  There were still plenty of tarpon to be found around flamingo which is a little run from Key Largo but that is where the fish are.  We’ve been having luck finding mullet for bait back there and soaking them in the channels for nice size 40-80 lb tarpon.  The two days before I left for vacation before last weekend we caught 8 out of 14 tarpon – incredible!  Mostly residents not the huge spawning migrators, but still lots of fun.  There has been a handful of snook too drifting pinfish or jigging big shrimp around the islands or off the mainland.  A few reds are around too, mostly in the real skinny water but can be found on the right tides around the islands and moats and such.  We’ve also had plenty of trout, snappers, ladyfish, that kind of thing.  Big sharks such as bull and lemons can be found as well as some blacktips for big rod bending action.  Today we got this big smoker king 35 lbs while we were tarpon/shark fishing a channel, pretty unusual catch!  If your thinking of fishing key largo in july give me a ring, fishing is still productive!

7-14-13 Offshore Fishing in Key Largo in Mid July

The deep sea fishing in Key Largo has been pretty productive lately. We had a few tough days, but still managed to catch plenty of fish for dinner every trip. Fishing just a 20 minute drive south of Key Largo we have been trolling on the humps and catching blackfin tuna and skipjack tuna, a couple big amberjack, and some mahi mahi on the way in and out. We had a daytime swordfish charter two days ago and went 2 for 2 on swordfish. They weren’t monsters, but both were legal fish, we got some great under water pics of the second fish. One day we did a little “deep dropping” , fishing the bottom in 700′ of water and caught 3 big barrel fish up to 26 lbs. The Reef Fishing has been very good and the most consistent bet the last couple of weeks. There’s been plenty of yellowtail snapper, a handful of nice mutton snapper, some big mangrove snapper, and a couple of groupers and sharks mixed in. Some of the days were tough on mahi and we were able to stop at the reef on the way home for dinner.

6/28/13 June Key Largo Tarpon Fishing Report

The june key largo tarpon fishing has still been productive.  Not a whole lot of big numbers but have gotten some nice tarpon just about every trip the last week that we’ve tried.  Falling tide in the afternoons earlier in the week on the end of our day trips produced fish every day on dead mullet.  The last few evenings the tide has been later so on our night trips we’ve caught them, 2 out of 3 two nights ago, and 2 out of 4 last night.  Plus even some other big things such as sharks and the elusive mud marlin.  If you want to catch some summer key largo tarpon fishing then it’s a good time to go.  The day time fishing deep in the everglades has been productive too – that fishery is very good in July and August and not many people fishing then.  Drifting live crabs on the evening trips locally around key largo bridges with falling tide should be a good bet through July and often you can find guides willing to go a little later since many of us are not fishing every day and the fishing closer to dark can be a better bet.  Give me a call – we’ll put you on some big ones!

6-26-13 Key Largo Deep Sea Fishing Report

It’s officially summer time here in Key Largo which means it’s time for Mahi! The bite the last few weeks has been pretty good overall, and there’s been fish of all sizes. We are having to measure some fish to see if they are legal size, and then we’ve had some nice bulls up to 30 lbs. There’s also been quite a few “football” size blackfin tuna on the humps south of key largo. The swordfishing has been a little tough lately, but we did manage two nice fish, one around 110 lbs and the other around 130 lbs. I imagine the mahi fishing will remain good, the tuna bite should improve, and hopefully the sword bite turns into a great bite like it did last year at this time. Make the drive a few miles south and send us an email when you’re ready to go fishing.

6/21/13 June Key Largo Tarpon Fishing

Well the june key largo tarpon fishing is still happening.  Fishing is not quite what it was in the spring but still a mix of migrating fish with plenty of locals.  We had some action in the backcountry a few days ago fishing them around flamingo channels and the surronding area.  Mostly fishing fresh dead mullet.  Today we ran back near key largo and fished some of the local channels and caught a big tarpon as well as a ‘mud marlin.’  A couple evenings ago we also had 2 bites and caught 1 big tarpon in the same area.  In the backcountry the tarpon fishing can get good in a hurry though can turn off just as quick.  There is still plenty of action fishing for trout, snappers, ladyfish, etc…  Some snook have been off the shorelines of the mainland and some of the backcountry creeks and moats.  A few redfish can be found in the super skinny water too.61913poon

6/11/13 June Backcountry Fishing in Key Largo

Well the june key largo fishing backcountry has been a little tough the last week.  We’ve had some nasty green water and lots of grass/weed from the hard offshore winds.  Though today it laid out nicely and things started to get a bit better for us.  We went in the gulf of mexico which is a long ride from key largo but from our docks can be done.  The wrecks were not red hot but had some good fish to be caught.  We had lots of big sharks including some blacktips, a lemon, and plenty of hard fighting bull sharks.  We also caught 4 big goliath groupers up to several hundred pounds.  The key largo shark fishing is a good bet in the summer.  We had several shots at permit and did catch one too.  The fish were not biting very good though only had a couple try to eat, on shrimps and crabs both tested.  We also got a nice little cobia plus pulled off another.  Great key largo fishing charter in june.
